How to Measure

Points of Measurement

Understanding elevator dimensions is vital to buying protective padding that not only looks great and protects properly but fits just right as well. Here are some simple points and resources to keep in mind when properly measuring the interior dimensions of an elevator cab.

  1. Measure the width of both sidewalls from the front corner to the rear corner.
  2. To measure the width of the elevator back wall, measure from the left side wall corner to the right side wall corner.
  3. After you’ve measured from the floor to the ceiling, adjust the measured elevator dimensions depending on the hanging system. If wall studs are installed, measure from the stud to the floor. If you need grommets, additional measurements will be required. It is also important to remember to deduct 4” from the floor edge, and therefore the overall height required, for government compliance.
  4. When finding the dimensions for the front return, measure width and height above. To include a cutout, measure the width and length of it. Measure it from both sides, then measure from the top of the elevator or stud down to where the cutout begins continuing on to the bottom edge of the cutout opening needed. If there are two cutouts, repeat these above steps.

Before measuring anything at all, it is always good to keep in mind the Pound Capacity, depicted in the Elevator Dimensions Chart (below). Though not an exact point of reference, this chart is a helpful tool, especially once you realize that your measured elevator dimensions are disproportionate to the elevator’s listed maximum capacity.

Instructional Video

If you’re a more visual learner, check out the video we’ve made below, which thoroughly outlines how to obtain accurate elevator dimensions before deciding to buy our elevator protective padding.

If you’re still struggling to find accurate dimensions for your elevator, simply give us a call, and one of our trained customer service experts will give you a hand. However, please have the following information available when you call:

  • The pound capacity of the elevator
  • If there are walls studs already installed inside your elevator walls
  • Whether or not you’re hanging pads off of wall studs, raised panels or a suspended ceiling

Once you have accurate elevator dimensions, you can then begin the fun part—figuring out which padding best fits you and your elevator by getting a quote and then filling out an order form.
